Last night I received an email from a man representing a west coast brand that seemed legit. He wanted to buy my copper stars on navy design that he’d seen on leggings at Zazzle, and put the design on his own company’s leggings and sell them.
We’re talking a limited use contract here; not purchasing all rights to the design. I was interested (hey, it’s money, right?). So I did some checking, and all his contact info checked out. He was who he said he was, working for the company he said he was with.
The one thing that troubled me was that I saw he was being supplied by a Chinese clothing manufacturer.
We corresponded some more. He said he wanted to sell my leggings design on Amazon for $4!!!
*Edit: his latest response indicates that $4 would be his manufacturing cost. He was going to mark them up from there. This is still ridiculous. there is no way that manufacturing and shipping those leggings to the U.S. could only cost $4 unless someone is really cheating.
As a seamstress as well as a business owner, I can confidently tell you that there is NO way those leggings can be manufactured state-side for $4! The cost of the material alone is more than that, then there’s the cost of the ink and printing, then distribution and marketing…
And then I got to thinking about quality. What kind of quality leggings would those be?
I double-checked the going rates on Amazon: yes, you CAN buy leggings almost that cheaply! But if you want quality and no holes…would you really dare?
I don’t see how the Chinese can afford to manufacture leggings for that price either. Their cost of living is very high and they’re living under a communist regime (socialism always inflicts high tax and regulatory burdens).
How can anyone even afford to survive–especially in China–while creating leggings so cheaply? Who’ve they got working for them? Slave labor? Convicts?
And that doesn’t even get into the issues with how do I keep my design from being stolen and counterfeited across many products once that Chinese company gets their hands on it? I’d have no legal recourse…
I don’t want to be associated with undercutting the market and devaluing everyone’s time and effort.
If you want to buy my cute quality leggings, you’ll have to buy them on Zazzle or not at all.
